Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

by Ashik Shah on 31 December 1996

Clarity and accessibility are distinct virtues of this book.  The Peter Bernstein (1919-2009) narrates in Against the Gods a history of mankind’s understanding and management of risk.  The story begins with the early gamblers of ancient Greece and encompasses the 17th century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat.    The book will give you a good sense of the intellectual journey and provide some food for thought.

Peter L. Bernstein was both an economist and investor, and the founding editor of The Journal of Portfolio Management.  He is also the author of Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street.
